Day 59...Thursday, September 11, 2008...The Hoh Rain Forest

All of that rich French food from last night required a few exra hours of sleep, so we headed out of Port Angeles shortly after noon en route to the Hoh Rain Forest.
It was a beautiful drive through the Olympic National Park's sensational old-growth forests. This is logging country...well...parts of it, thanks to the Spotted Owl. While I understand the need for logging (trees are, after all, one of our major sources of wood), there is no doubt that the effects on the land are really, really ugly. We stopped frequently along the way to take a look at some of the larger old-growth trees...wow...they were huge!
We got to the Hoh Rain Forest around 4:00PM, and that gave us plenty of time to set up camp. Some deer, obviously oblivious to humans, were wandering around the campsites...fun. I cooked maybe my best dinner of the entire trip...marinated and grilled giant prawns and sauteed Halibut cheeks with a Chanterelle mushroom cream sauce...Wow! By the time that we finally ate, it was already dark so, while I know that the meal tasted good, I can't say how it looked.
Tomorrow, we're off to McMinville, Oregon...Pinot Noir country...I'm excited!
