Day 62...Sunday, September 14, 2008...A Last Tasting Stop...A Scenic Drive Down the Oregon Coast

Waking up this morning, it occurred to me that I might have missed a winery or two yesterday...so, having had that great bottle of Penner-Ash Pinot Noir last night, we decided to stop at the winery on the way out of the Willamite Valley.
Lynn Penner-Ash is one of the real pioneers among female winemakers. Having "apprenticed" as a winemaker at several other Oregon wineries, she started her own several years ago. Now housed in a modern, "state of the art" facility, Penner-Ash produces some of the best Pinot Noir in Oregon, if not the world. The wines have that characteristic "grapey" quality, but also possess great structure and balance. Naturally, I had to buy a few bottles...walking away with three magnums of that great 2005 Dussin Vineyard bottling.
With the Escape now filled close to the manufacturer's maximum allowable weight, we set off for the Oregon coast on our way to Crater Lake National Park. It was marvelously scenic...the ocean, historic lighthouses, "Seal Rock". It was also slow, as a result of which, we were only able to make it as far as Reedsport before calling it a day as evening fell.
Reedsport is not exactly the "culinary capitol" of Oregon, but we were able to find a pleasant little Mexican restaurant, Sol de Mexico, not far from our hotel. Tacos al carbon, cheese enchiladas, and a couple of Dos Equis tasted pretty good after a long days drive.
