"North to Alaska"...Day 32...Friday, July 5, 2013

Up early...big day. I call Bill, who is over at his campground, to meet for coffee. The streets of Skagway are deserted at 6:00AM...save for the street sweeping machine cleaning the streets of yesterday's detritus.
I'm at the local coffee shop at 6:00...it finally opens at 6:30. I share a table with Ian...camping here with his family from Calgary. Bill arrives at 6:45...more coffee...over to Bill's campground to give Kechi a last walk before we head over to the docks for our catamaran trip. We board at 8:00...there's coffee and muffins...excellent.
Soon, we're off down the long fjord to Juneau. Forty minutes into the trip, we spot our first whales...big "humpbacks"...lots of good photos. Then, later, more whales, sea lions, seals...awesome.
Around 1200, we dock thirty miles from Juneau and board a bus for the trip downtown. We've already gotten several "tips" that "Tracie's Crab Shack" is THE place to go. We go. We get the "Full Bucket"...five pounds of crab legs with slaw, crab bisque and rolls...it's a splendid (if expensive) feast washed down with several glasses of and excellent Washington Pinot Gris. We inquire as to the local "dive bar"...head there...drink cheap beer.
At 3:30, we're back on the bus and heading to the Mendenhall Glacier...very impressive...lots of photos.
Back on the bus to the dock. Back on the boat for the return trip to Skagway...more whales, sea lion, etc.
Back to Skagway at 8:00. Bill is done for the day...I'm thirsty. I head for the "Skagway Brewing Company"...all "ales"...I end up drinking Pabst on draft.
Then back to the Morning Wood. Bartender likes "techno"...we talk about "mashup"...Girl Talk's "All Day"...he downloads it...plays it...more beer...this blog post...all good.
Time for bed!!
