Day 18...Ninilchik to Homer...Camping on the "Spit"

Yesterday we drove south from Ninilchik to the town of Homer on the far southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. There's a narrow strip of land that goes out about four miles that's called the Homer "Spit". We camped there in a public park right on the beach...more fantastic views.
For dinner, we had linguine with white clam sauce and a really nice bottle of chardonnay from California. Tomorrow, we're going to try our hands at fishing in the Homer Spit "Fishing Hole".
The beach on the Spit is covered with lots of round flat stones (see photo) that remind me of the vineyards in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape region of France. The stones help reflect and store heat from the day so that the grapes ripen early and evenly.
We did a little gold panning today and found some gold. I seemed to have less gold at the end of the day, and Paul and Hunter seemed to have more than I thought. But that's OK because they're my fiends. I'm actually glad for them.
