Camping Out West...Days 19-21...Monday-Wednesday, June 5-7, 2010...Capitol Reef National Park

A relaxing drive on Monday out of Canyonlands, north through Moab again, then west and south to Capitol Reef National Park. This was once a Mormon settlement, and the early residents planted fruit orchards...and I am camping in and among the fruit trees...tranquil. Deer meander through at dawn and dusk.
I took a spectacular drive on Tuesday...west out of the Park, then south through the Dixie National Forest. Then, east through the canyons of Grand Staircase National Monument and back into Capitol Reef on the Burr Trail. Stopped for a great lunch along the way at the Burr Trail Grill...hand sliced turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato on freshly-baked herb bread...wonderful...and a very friendly staff as well.
At points, I got out and did some hiking in the canyons...majestic.
Coming back into Capitol Reef, I had to negotiate a hellish set of steep switchbacks...dropping over 900 feet in less than half a mile. No problem...a quick change into dry hiking pants, and I was good to go!
Wednesday, I drove the park road and drove/hiked other canyons, as well as smaller "washes"...great exercise and wonderful views.
Cooked some great meals here...grilled N.Y. Strip, Indonesian Pork Satay...you know, the usual stuff.
Tomorrow, I'll be driving 150 miles or so west and south to Bryce Canyon National Park for a five-day stay.
Life is good!
