Camping Out West...Day59...Saturday, August 14, 2010...A trip to Pyramid Lake and Virginia City.

Tom's at mass when I wake up, so I fix myself some coffee and read the newspaper until he returns.
Around 10:00AM, we head out on a drive...Tom wants me to see the surrounding area. First we head north to Pyramid Lake...it's a saltwater lake and located on a Paiute Indian Reservation...it's a big lake.
From there, we head a little east and take part of the road that I'll be traveling on in a few weeks to get to "Burning Man".
Then we're heading south to the old mining town of Virginia City...up in the mountains. It's touristy, hokey...but it's still fun. We stop at a local "saloon" for a beer or two...and a chance to view the famous "Suicide Table". Apparently, it's not good luck to own this particular table...or so they say.
Tom appreciates my love of the "Old West, so he takes me out to see one of the local "ranches". Lots of girls around, but where are the horses and cattle???
It's almost 5:00PM by the time that we finally return home (we've covered over 200 miles). Just enough time to shower, change and head out to dinner at Louis Basque Corner. There are generations of Basque people scattered throughout Nevada...having originally come to America to herd sheep. The food is simple and delicious...soup, a salad, choice of entree, and dessert. Tom and I split lamb chops and sweetbreads, and we enjoy a few carafes of some excellent Basque area wine. Seating is communal, so we're sitting with two local guys (one of whom worked in Dearborn a few years back) and a couple from San Diego...it's all great fun.
Back home, Tom and I are up late...telling more jokes and retelling old stories...more fun. Tom has invited guests for dinner tomorrow night, so we figure we need to get at least a little sleep before then.
